If you’re a philosopher, an expert in quantum mechanics or spend a lot of time on Facebook, you probably have heard of Schrödinger’s Cat.  It’s a theoretical construct that says something can be in two different states at the same time.  With the cat, for example, the argument was that after being exposed to poison there was an exact point in time where it was simultaneously alive and dead.  Animal lovers (I’m looking at you Heather Achenbach) please don’t be alarmed, no actual cat was harmed during the promulgation of this paradox.
So why do I say that we are Schrödinger’s Rotary Club?  Because at this point in time (December of 2020), I feel we are both simultaneously on the cusp of significantly expanding our footprint in the community as a force for good and on the cusp of going out of business.  The next few months will determine the direction.

We cannot sit on the sidelines and wait for things to get back to “normal”.  I realize that we can’t do the same things and we may not be as effective, but we can’t get complacent and expect things to magically bounce back.  But let me be clear, while the pandemic is not helping matters it will not be the cause of our downfall should that be the path we end up on.

Although it’s probably the right decision, I was not happy with going back to all virtual meetings because the energy level of the club diminishes significantly.  Going into the holiday season and with no meetings scheduled for the last two weeks of December, it probably wasn’t going to be the most productive of Rotary months anyway but we can’t just go dormant.  There are things to do.

The Giving Budget needs to be finalized.  The Run With Rotary needs to get it’s planning started (whether we do an in-person or virtual 5K).  Another fundraiser needs to be setup for some time between January and March.  We need to identify another service project.

What can you do to help?
  • Show up to the virtual meetings.  I know some of you have work or other commitments that make attendance difficult but, if you can, please show up. If your having issues with Zoom or other technological issues, please reach out to me or Matt Romanoski and we can help.
  • Pay your dues.  If you haven’t paid your quarterly dues, I will be reaching out to you later this week.  If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Youngberg who methodically tracks every cent.  Please note that, due to the cancellation of in-person meetings, we will be adjusting the monthly dues.  More details will be forthcoming after the Board meeting on Monday.
  • Come up with a COVID friendly fundraising idea (thank you to Bill Beachell who sent one over recently).
  • If you’re not on the board but would like to be considered for a board slot next year, let President-Elect Andy Mozumdar know.
  • Think about prospective new members.  I know it’s hard to recruit new members in the current environment but once the fog lifts and we are back to in-person meetings, let’s hit the ground running.
  • If you’re on Facebook, like the Rotary Club of Montgomery/Rocky Hill page and like/share the posts.  Better yet, if you have some suggestions about stuff we can be posting on that page to boost our visibility to the community, send it to our PR maven Beth Desai.
Let’s make things happen!

Rotarically Yours,
Zoltan Nagy
President
Rotary Club of Montgomery/Rocky Hill (NJ)
